On Wednesday 8th April 2009 Tom Hart-Dyke came to talk to Ticehurst Gardeners in Ticehurst Village Hall. There were nearly 100 members and guests gathered to hear him talk about ‘A Modern Day Plant Hunter’. We heard how he was inspired by ‘Granny’ and orchids. He planned a two-year trip to SE Asia and Australasia to see orchids in their natural surroundings. Coming home via San Francisco, in order to see the giant redwoods in Yosemite National Park, he decided to travel south down the west coast of America and on into Central Southern America. Here he and his travelling companion were captured and held hostage for nine months before being released. It was during his time in captivity that he conceived the idea of the World Garden. On return to the UK he set about realising his idea in the walled garden of his home at Lullingstone Castle. In the years since his return the World Garden has blossomed with plants grown from the seeds he collected on his travels and those bought for specific ‘countries’. Many of the plants have proved surprisingly hardy, although the snow and severe cold this winter took its toll. All this was delivered at break-neck speed – he condensed ten years of his life into about an hour - and was accompanied by slides of plants whose seeds he had collected. He had also brought several exotic plants with him which we were encouraged to examine and stroke. A thoroughly enjoyable evening
